the word is

Last weeks word:

is

UNKNOWN

:D

if you look very very (very) hard you can sort of kinda see it there :)

funny thing, I had to name a file with that word, and because I couldn’t read it – I named the file “Unknown”.

if this post makes no sense to you – click here

Since nobody got it right, there are no first prizes.
But as Peter managed to convince so many people that “valfaoeen” (who can’t spell now Mr Bond??) was the correct answer – he gets a Fredo Frog bonus prize

Thanks for playing – keep an eye open for next weeks word,

Will.

gaaa

Well there goes my good idea. I was hoping that by using C# one was able to create a stand alone exe (with no runtimes). .NET has a very fat 20MB runtime file :( look here As far as I can tell this means if you want to write a VB(.net) or C# app (or C++???? not sure) you will need to give your users this runtime :(.

Looks like I shall have to stick to VS6 C++ for my winexe needs. Fortunatally there is an IMHO better language with a smaller runtime out there (at a quarter of the size) and a smaller SDK (at about 20MB rather than > 1GB)

M$ Access (and Chuck saves the day)

I have changed my stance slightly on access after recent events. I now believe that it’s greatest weakness is also it’s only strength. The fact that the whole database is a single file – and that all processing is done on the client side is a rather simple and old design, and one that isn’t so great for most applications. However in this simplicity is it’s good point – you don’t need to run a sever or any fancy software to use it – just have office installed on the client – and give it access to the file.

Due to this – I was able to get Chuck to save the day(tm) at work by sharing the 40GB of shared data, and it took only about 20min to setup. Now my biggest worry is getting the actual server back so that we can have SQL Server running again.

The Disk Shop

Well I have “finally” tested their returns department.

They are friendly and seem to be doing all they can – we had a DOA motherboard which I returned. After phoning and informing the guy that the computer was infact our server – he looked at it straight away and phoned back within 5min with the diagnosis. Alas the part isn’t in stock so we have to wait… :(

Their phone system is pretty crap – I have been bounced around several different people before – so remember the name of who you talked to and get transferred straight to them.

Why Windows Sux

The main problem with Windows is not the actual software system itself in my opinion – but the cost.

Upgrading an office or server is an extreemly costly exercise because one must purchase licences for each individual PC and it easily blows out an IT budgit.

So what happens – is that offices don’t upgrade. They keep their 95, and 98 machines running. why? because they still do the job they did six years ago. The problem is if you want to start utalising the newer features of Windows (or perhaps you just want it to crash less) – you can’t. Not without $$$ So in the end – people run inferior versions of the system (which even in it’s latest form does not shine – it just beats it predecessors)

Open source solutions on the other hand have the lovely advantage of being free, which means that people can for no monetry cost always run the latest versions.

Now that is just a monetry comparison – do not get me started on the quality of the operating system itself.

what is this word please

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, omegadelta.net is proud to bring you “what is this word please” a weekly competition of literary and archeological merit. Below is this weeks word. To play the game, all you have to do is reply with your guess as first line of your comment (the rest of your comment can be whatever you like). In the future I may even give out a small reward to any registered user who guesses it correctly :). Well, don’t waste any time – try and decipher the word below. Take as many guesses as you like – just one guess per comment reply :)

There are no tricks – that is a real English word, you would be able to find it in most (if not all) English dictionaries.
