He’ll yeah

iOS 4.3 finally adds the ability for you to create a custom dictionary of words.

I always felt it lame that iOS would correct swear words into something else. I don’t care that it doesn’t correct words *to* swear words (in the case of typos, etc), but why not have a list of “naughty” words that it won’t correct to, but at least lets you type. In any case, “hell” is hardly a naughty word, is there really a need to correct it to “he’ll”???

Some people worked out that you if you created a contact with the name of your dictionary word, it wouldn’t autocorrect away from it. Not wanting to really have a contact list full of swear words though, this seemed like a poor mans workaround.

Finally in iOS 4.3 (at least that’s when I noticed it) you can define your own custom dictionary. Go to Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> Edit User Dictionary… and swear to your heart’s content :)

My brother keeps complaining how iOS cannot learn these words, unlike even an old Nokia phone. Well at least there is a workaround for now, and maybe iOS will add an “add to dictionary” feature in the future as you’re typing.
