John Knoll wins again

2006-08-24 21:42

It was going to be the year that John Knoll lost an i-think award and his dignity to the Special Effects Supervisor of Brokeback Mountain.

In a very suspicious outcome however, he scraped in with a margin of only a single vote.

Spam This!

2006-03-29 00:19

I’ve finally added some code to make the spammers life a bit harder.

- Posts 60 days old or more can’t be commented on
- Comment <a> links have rel=”nofollow” added for 5 days after posting (means that Google ignores them for 5 days)
- the BB code string ‘[url=’ is banned.

This should hopefully be fairly effective. If they still get through I’ll have to add some more filters.

Rhys – thanks for the anti-spamming tips, they were useful :)

Cheers,

Will.

ADSL Online!

2006-02-22 00:22

Well I didn’t get ADSL2, but my ADSL1 was reconnected in a record 2 business days! Unbelievable – and I was impressed when he said it might be connected by Friday. Go Internode! The free Internode dial-up account is also very useful when you’re moving or just away from home.

Looking like gaming will be on for Sunday then :D

Moving House, Spam, ADSL2

2006-02-17 15:42

Big news, we are moving house tomorrow to a new place in South Yarra which is a short walk for Alison to work and a short bike ride for me.

Spammers (or spam bots) seem to have hit OmegaDelta.net. If someone coded a spam bot the jokes on them because no other site uses my software (and I will have to add some spam busting code). If it’s a whole bunch of spam-slaves well there’s not much I can do except keep deleting…

And it seems that ADSL2+ is chasing me wherever I go. Just before I left Toowong, it got ADSL2+. I arrived in Glen Waverley – 20k from the city and not surprisingly no ADSL2+. Now I move to within 1k of the city and I don’t have ADSL2+, meanwhile in the last few months the Glen Waverley exchange has been enabled… great!

So that’s what a Canon EOS 1D looks like on the inside!

… and the CF card survived – no surprise really though, those things are tough.

Dodge Memory Sticks

2006-01-20 21:50

Last year I purchased a 1 GB memory stick (MS Pro Duo) off ebay. It was a Sony (supposidly) imported from Japan.

The memory stick worked as advertised, transfering at the faster speed of the “Pro” range and allowing me to use the full 1GB (apparently there are some scams where people sell supposidly large media/devices which are actually small). However, I soon realised that the craftmanship was quite pathetic.

The top of the card was basically coming off. Working with PSP’s as I am, and with a Camera that also takes the same memory, I was re-inserting it several times a week. Soon enough, it gave in and snapped in two places. Super glue did the trick and it was fine for another two weeks – then even more of it fell off. Super glue the second time was far less effective. I have managed to insert the card back into my PSP and it is recognised, but I am pretty sure when I remove it next it will desintergrate (hopefully I can extract all the parts from the PSP). I’m glad the thing didn’t totally die as it was $140 – and it is still useful in the PSP, but rather annoying that I can’t now change memory sticks in the PSP.

I am now thinking it was possibly a counterfeit? Ebay is till currently loaded with heaps of the same model but they could all be too.

So, here’s a little guide if you are buying Memory Sticks for a PSP or Sony Camera:

Brown Sony MS: BAD BAD – avoid like the plague

Blue or Black Sony/Sandisk: These I know are genuine. They should last, however they are the same design with two halves glued together and can come a part (I have experimented with a 32MB one)

Transparent, Coloured Sandisk: These are the best. Instead of the other two which have the circuit and memory mounted on a board, the circuitry and memory are in the same black unit and the connecters form part of this unit as well. The plastic is properly sealed and not glued. You will have a hard time breaking these, even if you are constantly re-inserting the card into several devices/readers.

There are some also really cool PSP extensions such as the Neo Flash Converter which is basically a CF reader which plugs into the MS slot. It also comes with a 4GB Micro-HDD which is neat (noting that the HDD’s are slow so not as good for games, but fine for watching movies, and probably no slower than the official UMD’s anyway). The only probably is finding one down-under – good luck!

At least it lasted a year and a half…

My PowerBook is a little outclassed now but the look of it. It must suck if you bought one two weeks ago!

By far the finest laptops around – and now with an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 on a PCI Express bus to top off all the other cool features!

Nice.

Poo-cream

The sad part is that I actually ate it.

Poo-cream

Pretty much sums up most of the food we (Jess, James, Peter and I) had at smorgy’s – i.e. crap.

Revelations

2005-12-16 13:06

The Mill has a recent article on the James D. Cameron revelation prediction which is rather funny (am I that predictable?).

While you are there, be sure to check out the three new commandments which I hope will be ratified ASAP.
